Basically, you want to get at least 50% omega 3 fatty acids in each fish oil capsule and these fats contain DHA and EPA fats.
The most beneficial one is DHA as this provides most of the health benefits, especially the anti-inflammatory ones for your heart and brain.
Most high dose fish oil contains more EPA as it is easier and cheaper to produce, just check the labels and you’ll see what I mean!
The optimum ratio is 2:1 DHA to EPA for the maximum health benefits with at least 250-300mg of DHA in each soft gel.
Don’t be fooled by the wild claims many companies make, simply follow these tips and check out the label or website to see the amount of omega 3 and the individual DHA/EPA levels. If these levels are combined, simply avoid the oil as this always means low amounts of DHA.
The other main factor to look for in high dose fish oil is purity. The higher the dose, the higher the potential for more toxins.
With a bad oil you may be unwittingly introducing substances into your body that you do not want like mercury, PCBs or even increasing your load of free radicals. You may also only be getting minimal anti inflammatory benefits or even none at all.
Always use a molecularly distilled oil as this process removes the impurities from the oil by weight and some companies, like the one I use from New Zealand, also put their oil through another purifying process for complete peace of mind.
For the maximum health benefits, you should ideally take two 1000mg fish oil supplements each day, as long as they adhere to the guidelines above. If you have a particular condition like arthritis, it is fine to take four a day until the symptoms allow you to reduce this amount.
Just by taking a couple of these each day can also halve your risk of a premature death from a cardiac arrest.
As you can see, once you know what to look for, you can easily select the finest and most potent fish oil supplements and enjoy the maximum health benefits for a longer and healthier life.
